PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
Lawrence Scrima, PhD, DABSM, DABFM, Director of the Sleep Alertness-Disorder Center, is Board Certified by the American Board of Sleep Medicine since 1982, to evaluate, interpret sleep tests, diagnose and recommend accepted treatment options for all sleep disorders. Dr. Scrima has 19 years of clinical experience in sleep disorders evaluation and 21 years experience in research related to the functions of sleep, causes and treatments of sleep disorders.
Dr. Scrima, is an internationally acknowledged sleep disorders expert, who directed sleep disorders centers at 2 Medical Schools, the University of Miami School of Medicine, Neurology Department (1982-1984) and the University of Arkansas for Medical Science (1984-1990), where he also conducted research on sleep disorders lectured on sleep physiology, sleep and alertness disorders to medical students and physicians, as an Assistant and then an Associate Professor of Medicine, Psychiatry and Interdisciplinary Toxicology. Dr. Scrima has conducted research related to the causes and treatments of sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, restless legs and periodic limb movement (also known nocturnal myoclonus) for the National Institutes of Health, Veterans Administration Hospital and the Food and Drug Administration and for pharmaceutical companies. Moreover, he is doing research on sleepwalking and night terrors in adults and children Dr. Scrima is a member of the medical advisory board of the Narcolepsy Network and, until 1998, was on the medical advisory board of the The Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation. He also sponsors support group meetings for patients with narcolepsy, sleep apnea, restless legs, sleep walking and night terrors. Dr. Scrima is a founding member of the Colorado Sleep Society and is a member of the board as its secretary. He has over 100 publications in the field of sleep and sleep disorders. Dr. Scrima frequently is invited to give continuing medical education lectures to physicians, nurses, and health-related industries and to lay audiences. He is an active consultant on sleep, sleep disorders, treatments for sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, restless legs and periodic limb movemnt disorders to health insurance, home health care companies, hospitals, physicians and lawyers. Moreover, Dr. Scrima provides consultation on shift work problems, shift work scheduling to industrial companies and unions.
